The Shakers are a religious sect that branched off of mainstream Protestantism in 1747. Initially they were known as the “Shaking Quakers” due to the spasms that seized them during services. Women often led the communal, celibate groups and the communities were known for the quality of their schools, herbal remedies and carefully crafted furniture.
Children were brought into the settlements through new families joining or adoption; at age 21 children could decide whether to remain with the group or leave. 20 settlements were built and at one point there were 5,000 members. However, interest waned over the years and eventually the communities died out.
We had the opportunity to visit a Shaker living history museum in Canterbury, NH and tour the buildings and the lovely gardens.
I don’t think I could have gone for all the beliefs but the idea of living in a community stressing beautiful workmanship, agriculture and healthy food does sound appealing.
I'd love to hear from you!
