Seattle Good Food Network: March Meeting Highlights

This evening the Seattle Good Food Network (SGFN) held their fifth meeting at the Douglas Truth Library. More than 25 people attended, representing a diverse group of interested individuals and organizations such as Antioch University, Creatives4Community, City of Seattle, Readers2Eaters, and SCALLOPS.

SGFN asks what is the meaning of advocacy?

Is it taking a position on an issue such as Washington State Legislature’s recent adoption of a State Food Policy Council? Is it rallying behind a specific King Conservation District candidate? Or is it simply advocating for open communication and information sharing?

For now, the Seattle Good Food Network will let these answers slowly emerge from the group in due time.

In the meantime, they will be focusing on reaching out to communities and businesses that aren’t currently represented around the table. From the outset, the network wants to establish itself as a socially and economically diverse group. Additionally, SGFN will be planning a summer event(s), which may take the form of a CropMob, Speaking Engagement, (Un)conference, or Greendrinks style event, among other ideas. SGFN Asks Who Are We?

Every new organization is faced with a list of tough questions: who are we?; what’s our vision?; what’s our mission? Seattle Good Food Network: Meeting Highlights

This evening the Seattle Good Food Network held their third meeting at the Beacon Hill Library. About 24 people attended, representing a vibrant group of interested individuals and organizations such as Seattle Tilth, City of Seattle and CAGJ.

It was announced that Puget Sound Regional Council is looking into the creation of a Food Policy forum. If they decide to move forward they’ll need to work out details of an organizational structure, identifying regional representatives and programmatic responsibilities.

On the more local front, the City of Seattle has contracted with a team of consultants to look at the economic opportunities associated with our local food system. They’re also in the final stages of creating the Food Systems Policy Action Plan, which should be released in the next few months.

The City’s upcoming projects in 2010 include identifying publicly owned property for potential P-Patches, integrating food policy planning into the City’s neighborhood plan updates, and creating a formal Interdepartmental Team on food. There’s also interest in organizing a community summit and creating an online web portal.

The rest of the meeting was spent talking about the importance of outreach and coordination around urban agriculture and food system policy. There were some great points made about engaging a broader audience, reaching out to people where they are, and being inclusive. Everyone seemed to recognize that people are at the center of this growing movement.
