There’s a great new place to get your urban farm supplies and learn how to be more sustainable! UFH recently interviewed Eric Jonas to learn more about his Greenwood area store.
1. Why did you start your store and how did you choose the location?
I started this company out of my garage in December 2010 to supplement my income as a general contractor. I only wanted to build coops but I decided to start selling other products related to chicken keeping and it took on a life of it’s own – now here I am. Due to being so busy with all the other aspects of the industry I only had time to build and sell two coops in two years but I sold over 2000 baby chicks and all the other equipment that goes with them, all out of my home. I moved here to this lot in March of 2013. I’ve had my eye on this location the past two years; this is my dream location and here I am.
2. What’s the most unusual thing you stock?
The most unusual thing we stock is freeze dried mealworms. Chickens love these.
3. What is your favorite breed of chicken?
My favorite breed is the Black Cochin.
4. What do you hope to do with your store?
My goal is to create a resource where people can come not only to buy all their supplies but more importantly become exposed to the urban farming sustainable lifestyle. We hope to offer classes in all subjects to help educate people about urban farming and living healthy and sustainably on stuff they produce in their backyard. The most rewarding part is seeing the families come in with the kids and just look around. If the gate is open, come on in.
