Seattle Sheep Project

Lining up

Here is a great example of collaborative consumption  using modern technology to link on an ancient practice.  Do you know of other examples?

From Lydia Strand here’s news on the Seattle Sheep Project.

In response to your collaborative consumption post, I wanted to submit something unique my husband and I are doing with two other individuals – we’re raising sheep in the city! The official title of our endeavour is the Seattle Sheep Project.

We are a partnership working to raise sheep for breeding, fiber, meat, milk, and education in an urban setting. This started because my husband, Jared, and I were looking for some grazing space for the three ewe lambs that lived in our backyard in the Rainier Beach neighborhood. I posted a land inquiry on The Seattle Farm Co-op Yahoo Group and Charmaine Slaven contacted me to say that she and another Seattle Farm Co-op Yahoo Group member, Alex MacLeod, had partnered together on a flock of sheep and were also working on obtaining long term grazing space; maybe we could work together. This was less than two months ago, and things have already taken off for our partnership. We have in total 19 sheep at various locations in King County- Tukwila, Redmond, Renton- on land that has been generously offered up by private land owners. We take turns checking in on the sheep, using Google Calendar to choose our check on dates, we meet face to face monthly to talk about the status of the project and what is upcoming for our collective flock. We use email to give daily reports on the sheep and keep on task of our shepherding duties.

This is just an overview of our partnership, we have much more in the works!  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you-

How exciting and inspiring! I was out walking my dogs around my neighborhood in Snohomish county-Lynnwood, yesterday and noted a few large open areas that I would love to find use for! There were two areas I thought would be perfect for small grazing animals, goats, chickens, or perhaps just a nice in the city corn or pumpkin patch. I am pretty sure the city of lynnwood does not yet allow goats/sheep…but perhaps I need to work on changing that!

Wow! Cool! I’m part of the Urban Farm Co-op as well. It’s been such a great resource with assistance with gardening and raising chickens. One day we’d like to grow our urban farm to include some 4 footed animals, too, besides Lola, our trusty labrador. I hope your project continues to grow and flourish!

Gabriel – I would be interested in the areas you are looking at – I am looking to house about 15 goats and would love to work together to see if that could happen in Lynnwood. I live in Seattle but I can’t have that many critters here. Although I am looking into options.
