Making an Onion Braid

Now is the time to harvest onions, and a great way to store them is by braiding the tops and hanging them in a cool, dark place.

Once the tops have flopped over, pull the onions and put them in a shady, dry, well ventilated place where they can dry out a bit and cure.

To begin your braid start with three large onions with sturdy long stalks.

Each time you cross a bunch of stalks over add in another onion and add the attached stalks to the bunch you are braiding.

Soon you will have a lovely braid ready to hang.

Thanks! I need to braid my garlic too. I haven’t pulled my onions yet…they are still not flopping. I wonder if they will?!

They will flop eventually. It depends on when they were planted and the variety. I braid the garlic the same way – just make sure all is nice and dry or it will mold.
