Creating an Urban Farm Community

When reading some of my posts from a couple months ago, you might have picked up on the fact that I was getting a bit tired.  The truth is that the combination of garden, farm animals, children and work were about to do me in, and something needed to change.  Happily, things have changed and neighbors are now sharing the local farm goodness (and chores).

One neighbor stepped up to take care of the chickens.  We did a coop raising party, and in a day built this coop out of wire and wood panels attached to an existing chain link fence.

Next on the list was figuring out how to share taking care of the goats.  Vacation was a motivating force in training interested neighbors in how to care for them and milk Ophelia.

Here’s Ophelia on her stand ready for the next student.

Having a clip board with a schedule and a pad for writing down notes for the next caretaker has been helpful.

It’s not all smooth sailing as evidenced by one comment stating, “The goats seem a bit, well, angry tonight.”  But overall things are going great; I am much less overwhelmed, and the neighbors now have more access to hyper-local, healthy food.
