In September, schools will be getting a “Taste of Washington” thanks to the Washington School Nutrition Association and Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-School Program, who will be working together to get local food on the cafeteria trays.
By partnering school districts with nearby farms, students will be able to eat a hearty, fresh lunch comprised of local ingredients. Proposed menus include hamburgers with corn on the cob or baked potatoes and chili. (Both would be accompanied by milk and fruit salad.)
But the day doesn’t begin and end at lunch; schools are also encouraged to include farmer-focused curriculum so that students can meet the farmers that provide their food or learn how to grow food themselves. The goal of the program is to celebrate local agriculture and encourage children to think about their food systems.
