Seattle based nonprofit Solid Ground is leading an effort to create the Seattle Community Farm at Rainier Vista. Modeled after Marra Farm, the Seattle Community Farm will be a space for low-income residents of Rainier Valley to grow food for themselves and to share with the Rainier Valley Food Bank. While the garden will focus on food production, there will be many chances for gathering, celebrating, and learning. Garden education opportunities will be available throughout the growing season—seed saving, children’s gardening, and food preparation workshops are all being considered.
Working with their volunteer landscape architect, they would like to create a garden that reflects the tone of Rainier Vista and the surrounding community. To do that they need your help– please join Solid Ground outreach coordinators at the Rainier Valley Boys & Girls Club on March 3 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm to help create a garden design that reflects the tastes and needs of the diverse Rainier Valley community. If you have an opinion about fences, gathering spaces, or an outdoor kitchen, they want to hear about it.
This meeting will also be a time for general neighborhood feedback. The master architects of the New Rainier Vista will be present, asking residents what works (or doesn’t) about the surrounding neighborhood and greater community. This is a great opportunity to get involved with your neighborhood, and to help shape its continued growth.
Invite your neighbors and bring your kids; food and childcare will be provided. If you have any questions please contact Jamie Robinson or Leslie Heimer at urbanfarm@solid-ground.org.
