Seattle City Council Identifies Local Food As 2010 Priority

Last week we reported that Seattle City Council incorporated a number of local food system initiatives into their 2010 work program. Today the council went a step further and announced their vision for Seattle and key efforts for 2010. The council developed a list of 17 priorities intended to foster safe, just and healthy communities for all, to build a livable city for the future, and to invest public resources fairly and effectively.

“These priorities reflect our commitment to the people of Seattle. Residents need to know what specific initiatives we plan to work on and what the Council should be held accountable for accomplishing,” said Council President Richard Conlin during the presentation.

Local food was identified as one of six elements of a safe, just and healthy community for all; the others being domestic violence, education, neighborhoods, public safety, and race and social justice. In the area of local food the council has committed their efforts to implement the Local Food Action Initiative, including making 2010 “The Year of Urban Agriculture,” expanding the community garden program, and encouraging local food production and food-related businesses.
