Seattle Good Food Network: Meeting Highlights

This evening the Seattle Good Food Network held their third meeting at the Beacon Hill Library. About 24 people attended, representing a vibrant group of interested individuals and organizations such as Seattle Tilth, City of Seattle and CAGJ.

It was announced that Puget Sound Regional Council is looking into the creation of a Food Policy forum. If they decide to move forward they’ll need to work out details of an organizational structure, identifying regional representatives and programmatic responsibilities.

On the more local front, the City of Seattle has contracted with a team of consultants to look at the economic opportunities associated with our local food system. They’re also in the final stages of creating the Food Systems Policy Action Plan, which should be released in the next few months.

The City’s upcoming projects in 2010 include identifying publicly owned property for potential P-Patches, integrating food policy planning into the City’s neighborhood plan updates, and creating a formal Interdepartmental Team on food. There’s also interest in organizing a community summit and creating an online web portal.

The rest of the meeting was spent talking about the importance of outreach and coordination around urban agriculture and food system policy. There were some great points made about engaging a broader audience, reaching out to people where they are, and being inclusive. Everyone seemed to recognize that people are at the center of this growing movement.
