Mowing to Growing: An Urban Farming Competition

Terreform ONE, a New York-based non-profit organization that specializes in urban green design, has announced their first annual design competition, which focuses on urban agriculture.

One Prize is calling out to urban planners, architects, engineers and local food enthusiasts from any background or level of experience to transform typical landscapes into urban agriculture epicenters that will support the local food movement. This year the contest, titled Mowing to Growing: Rethinking the American Lawn, asks potential contestants to consider such questions as:

  • How can we better use the 40,000 square miles currently devoted to lawns nation-wide in order to boost local food production?
  • How can we use the surfaces of rooftops, parking lots and building facades to create productive green spaces?
  • What steps can we take to convert abandoned foreclosed properties and empty lots into mini-farms?

The goal of this contest is to uncover strategies and spur ideas on how to develop local food production for increased “self-sustenance, organic growth, and perpetual change.”

The contestant with the best design that answers these questions will win $10,000. Judges of the competition include Carol Coletta, founder of the radio show Smart City, Ben Schwegler, chief scientist at Walt Disney Imagineering, and others from varying backgrounds. The deadline for all submissions are due April 30.
