Food Centric Trip to San Francisco: Day Two

The second day of my trip to San Francisco (click here to read about Day One!) was spent strolling the streets of the Mission District and hiking through Glen Canyon Park. On a fluke I decided to walk a bit of highway in between bus transfers and happened upon this fabulous little community garden called White Crane Springs in the Inner Sunset district. It’s a 70+ plot style, member-led, sustainably farmed garden where folks grow a variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers.

Later that evening I found myself in the Marina district where I found this lime tree growing in someone’s front yard. It was the first citrus tree I’d seen in bloom. Overall, the lack of edible plants and fruit trees was surprising to me. I expected to see many a front yard garden and planter-strip herb patch, but most of the streets in San Francisco’s inner neighborhoods don’t have planter strips and the housing is much denser leaving little room for individual gardens.
