Alleycat Acres: Transforming the Urban Landscape

Ever wonder why that vacant lot across the street just sits there?

Well, the team behind Alleycat Acres, an upcoming urban farming collective, has wondered that time and time again. So they’re setting out to transform those gravel graveyards into a network of productive gardens. They’ll use the food from these gardens to power a sliding scale CSA targeted towards residents of Seattle in traditionally under-served neighborhoods.

Meet Sean Conroe, the “lead alleycat” behind the project. “I’ve been toying with this idea for quite some time,” he says. “I figured its either now or never, opted for the now and organized a team of volunteers to help turn this idea into reality.”

“We aim to create a collective of gardens that will allow us to create a unique, sliding scale CSA. We want to put fresh produce on the tables of families that may otherwise not be able to afford it – eating healthy is a luxury these days and we want to change that.  A “pocket farmers market” is also in the works, where anyone can buy our produce on a similar sliding scale.”

On top of growing healthy veggies and fruits, Alleycat Acres will be powering their CSA deliveries by bicycle, utilizing public transportation and possibly an electric truck as alternative modes of transportation. It’s clear from talking to Conroe for a few minutes that the group is dedicated to running this entire operation with the least impact on the urban environment as possible.

Since launching the project in late December, Conroe has organized a team of six volunteers that are working around the clock to get the first gardens up by March. “My fellow cats that are helping with this are amazing. I couldn’t do this without them.”

They’re now in the process of collaborating with land owners and working out the details for the first sites.
