Cascade Harvest Coalition, an organization dedicated to re-localizing the region’s food system, published a great blog post last week about the under utilization of urban spaces. More specifically, the article highlighted a recent planning effort undertaken by a University of Washington Urban Planning Class to identify a compelling use for a soon-to-be-vacant site in the University District. The process revealed overwhelming support for a public market that would serve to improve food access to the local community.
This comes as no surprise in a city where parking strips are being transformed into leafy garden patches and rooftops are being adorned with native plants. The only question is whether we can ramp these small scale efforts up to a bigger scale.
